Thailand is a Buddhist country. At religious sites, please take off your shoes and hat before entering a temple with Buddha statues. Don’t enter a temple when there is a religious gathering inside. Every statue, large or small, damaged or in good condition, is considered sacred.

Thailand is a country of constitutional monarchy. The king and the royal family members have a high status and are respected by the people in Thailand. Visitors should show respect to the king and the royal family members. Talking about the royal family and making comments detrimental to the reputation of the royal family are not allowed and are deemed heinous offences.

Thailand has a whole myriad of festivals. The National Day, the birthday of the king, is celebrated on December 5. Magha Puja Day is celebrated in a day in February, which is March 15 of the Thai calendar. Songkran Festival, New Year of Thai calendar, is celebrated on April 13-15. Visakha Bucha or simply “Vesak” is celebrated on May 23 for the birth, life, enlightenment and passing of Sakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism. Khao Phansa is celebrated as an important Buddhist festival on July 16, which is August 16 of Thai calendar. Loy Kra Thong is the full moon day celebrated in November (December of Thai calendar) as Thailand’s most poetic traditional festival.
