Dashain is a national holiday in Nepal. It is celebrated for 15 days in the fall of each year. Of the 15 days, the 8th, 9th and 10th days are the most important. Dashain is a festival for Goddess worship. The locals can have 5 to 7 days off, while school students, 15 to 30 days off.

Of Nepal’s residents, Hindus account for 80%, while Buddhists, about 10%; there are also some who believe in Islam and other religions. Different religions co-exist in harmony. Hinduism and Buddhism have much in common, and many temples of the two religions are shared by their believers. Hindus and Buddhists have similar dietary habits and taboos. They tend to refrain from eating pork and beef. There are also many vegetarians who eat only vegetables and never eat fish and meat. Established customs are to be observed when it comes to temple visit. People other than Hindus are not allowed to enter temples, and leather clothes, shoes and belts are not allowed in temples.
