Management Discussion of September Operating Data

 

During September 2012, international, domestic and regional passenger traffic (measured in RPK) all recorded an increase on a year-over-year basis, except for a slight drop in the number of passengers carried on international routes. However all indicators registered a decrease on a month-over-month basis affected by seasonal changes. As for cargo, year-over-year increases continued both in Revenue Freighter Tonne Kilometres (RFTK) and freighter tonnage carried. On a month-over-month basis, only regional routes recorded a decrease.

Passenger capacity, measured in Available Seat Kilometres (ASK), in September rose 4.1% year-over-year while passenger traffic, measured by Revenue Passenger Kilometres (RPK), increased by 2.8%. Capacity and RPK on domestic routes increased by 6.8% and 4.0% year-over-year respectively. Capacity on international routes grew by 0.6% year-over-year, with RPK increasing by 1.0%. Capacity on regional routes decreased by 0.2%, while RPK increased by 1.5%. The passenger load factor was 81.8%, a decrease of 1.0 percentage point year-over-year. For domestic routes, the passenger load factor decreased by 2.2 percentage points while that of international and regional routes increased by 0.4 and 1.3 percentage points.

Cargo capacity, measured in Available Freighter Tonne Kilometres (AFTK) increased by 3.5% year-over-year in September. Revenue Freighter Tonne Kilometres (RFTK) and freighter tonnage carried climbed by 10.8% and 11.3%, respectively compared with September 2011. The cargo load factor was 61.6%, an increase of 4.0 percentage points year-over-year.

Air China launched the Chongqing-Guilin route (Seven flights a week) starting 12 September.

Starting from 1 September, the purchase price of domestic jet fuel increased by RMB718 per tonne.

 

During September, the Company made the following adjustments to jet fuel surcharges presented in the chart below.

During the month, the Company added two aircraft, including one A320 and one B777-300ER aircraft. It has surrendered the lease of one B737 aircraft, one B757 aircraft and one B319 aircraft. As at the end of September, Air China operated a fleet of 321 aircraft.
