Delayed / Damaged / Lost Baggage

If your baggage fails to reach your destination on time or is damaged, please tell our baggage service counter in the terminal, and we will assist you to the largest extent possible.

 

Compensation and Lawsuit

If your checked baggage is damaged, you shall make the claim for compensation in writing to Air China within up to 7 days from the day of receipt of the checked baggage.
If your checked baggage is delayed, you shall make the claim for compensation in writing to Air China within up to 21 days from the day of receipt of the checked baggage.
A lawsuit must be settled within two years after the aircraft arrives at the destination or before the related flight is canceled; otherwise the lawsuit will be revoked.

 

Compensation Amounts
Domestic Flights
- If your checked baggage is damaged or lost, the compensation amount is less than RMB 100/kg (2.2 lbs) (or its equivalent in foreign currency). If the value of the baggage is less than RMB 100/kg (2.2 lbs) (or its equivalent in foreign currency), the compensation amount is the actual value of your baggage.
International Flights
  - For flights that meet the conditions set forth in the “Warsaw Convention”, the compensation limit per kilogram for your baggage is 17 SDR*. If the actual loss of your baggage is below this standard, compensation will be based on the actual loss of your baggage. The compensation limit for your unchecked baggage is 332 SDR *.
  - For flights that meet the conditions set forth in the “Montreal Convention”, the compensation limit per kilogram for your baggage is USD 30 per kilo (or its equivalent in foreign currency). If the actual loss of your baggage is below this standard, compensation will be based on the actual loss of your baggage. If you can provide adequate proof, the compensation limit for checked and unchecked baggage per passenger is 1131 SDR*.
- If the weight of your baggage cannot be determined, Air China will grant compensation based on the upper limit of the free baggage allowance of relevant class of service each passenger is entitled to.
- The one-time compensation for delayed baggage: RMB 300 for Economy Class (or its equivalent in foreign currency), RMB 400 for Business Class (or its equivalent in foreign currency ), and RMB 500 for First Class (or its equivalent in foreign currency).
- Baggage-related compensation shall be based on the relevant provisions of Air China’s rules and regulations on baggage transportation.
- If your baggage is insured, we can provide the relevant documents to you so that you can bring a claim for damages against your insurer.

 

*SDR refers the special drawing right stipulated by International Monetary Fund (IMF). One (1) SDR is about $ 1.37, and its exchange rate may fluctuate.
