2.Basic Information
The shell-shaped 450,000-square-meter airport is formerly known as Sahar International Airport and is named after Chhatrapati Shivaji, the 17th-century Maratha emperor. It’s the main international airport serving the Mumbai metropolitan area. In terms of passenger traffic, it’s India’s second busiest airport behind New Delhi International Airport, and was the world’s 35th busiest airport in 2015 according to Airports Council International, but in terms of cargo handled it’s been India’s busiest airport.
3.Terminal Information
The airport has two main passenger terminals, with Terminal 1 serving domestic passengers and Terminal 2 both international and domestic passengers.
The terminals offer 192 check-in counters, 60 boarding bridges, 14 baggage conveyor belts, 48 elevators, 75 lifts and 42 moving corridors.

6.VIP Lounge
The airport lounge can accommodate 440 passengers. It divides into different functional zones for library, business center, concierge service, smoking, restaurant, bar, spa/shower and recreation. A transit hotel on Level 1 also contains a luxury lounge which was highly recognized at the 2015 World Travel Awards ceremony held in Morocco.
7.Airport Transportation
The city of Mumbai is a north-south peninsula. The airport is located 45 kilometers to the southern tip of the peninsula and about 30 kilometers to the northern tip of the peninsula. The many hotels close to the airport offer pickup and drop-off services. It’s easy to flag down a taxi at the airport. If your flight arrives between 1am to 7am, the ride from the airport to your destination takes less than 1 hour. Roads tend to be very busy from 5pm to 9pm, and a trip to the airport tends to take at least 3 hours.

1.Suburban Trains:
Mumbai has three train lines linking to the outskirts: Western Line, Middle Line and Harbor Line. For most travelers, traveling by train is the best choice. Round-trip tickets are available for purchase at ticketing windows or automatic ticket vending machines. “Tourist Ticket” is a good option, which costs 160 INR and allows you to ride in First Class on the three lines within a day.
2.Buses:
Buses are run by Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) linking to all parts of the metropolitan area. If you plan to explore Mumbai by bus, you can purchase a Day Pass which costs 25 INR and qualifies you to ride all buses except express buses and air-conditioned buses.
3.Taxis:
It’s easy to flag down a taxi in Mumbai taxi. Black taxis, which do not have air conditioning, are cheaper and can carry 4 passengers with baggage. Private taxis with air conditioning and GPS cost 25% more and are clean and chauffeured by well-trained drivers, and reservation is required half an hour in advance. All taxis are available around the clock.
The fares of private taxis start from approximately 22 INR/kilometer and go up incrementally by 15 INR per kilometer. There’s a 25% surcharge for nighttime (0:00-5:00) rides.
Bordering on the Arabian Sea, the city has a tropical monsoon climate. The best travel period is from November to the following March when the weather is cool and pleasant.
