2. Basic Information
Located in the Sparta area in southeastern Greece, Athens International Airport (AIA) is the largest airport in Greece and a major air hub in southern Europe. It was also named “European Airport of the Year in 2004. The airport opened on March 29, 2001 as the only civilian airport in the city. It handles 16 million passengers a year. The airport accommodates Greece’s domestic flights and serves as a hub for international flights to major cities across the world.

Taxi:
Taxi stands are located on Level 1 of the terminal building; follow the directional signs. It costs 35 Euros and takes approximately 30 minutes to reach the downtown area.
Airport Bus:
Passengers can take Airport Bus Routes E92, E93, E94, E95, E96 and E97, which depart every 30 to 40 minutes. The bus fare is about 5 Euros.
Metro:
Passengers can take the metro downtown from the building outside Exit 1 on Level 1 of the terminal building.

1. Subway
Athens was one of the first few cities in the world to offer subway services. The 25.7 kilometer long subway system opened in 1925. Because there are many historical relics buried underground in Greece, the subway system has not been extensively developed. There is only one subway line in Athens, travelling between Kificia in the suburbs and the port Pireas, through the urban area. Three different subway fares are charged, based on the travel distance.
2. Bus
In Athens, bus lines provide service to the entire city. Public transportation is very convenient. You can purchase bus tickets in bus stations, newspaper stands or designated points of sale in major squares.
3. Taxi
In Athens, taxi services are comparatively inexpensive. The rules specify that the fare is doubled for travel between midnight and 5:00 am, or travel beyond a certain distance from the city center; if baggage weighs more than 10 kilograms, a small additional charge will be applied; fees are higher during the festival season. Calling for taxi service is quite common in Athens. The cost is an additional Euros 1~2.50 to call a taxi company to request that they send a car to a designated place at a specified time to pick you up.
