It is the third offshore airport in Japan, and is located in Tokoname City, south of Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture, on an artificial island in Ise Bay. The Nagoya Chubu Centrair International Airport officially opened on February 17, 2005, as an alternative to Nagoya Airport. The Airport has a number of environmentally friendly design features, including the D-shaped island which helps to maintain calm water within the Bay, and the shore that was built with natural stones.
